Coding Your Site - Firefox or IE?
by Scott AllenI read a lot of posts on forums that say some piece of code “works in Firefox but not Internet Explorer (IE)”. In my opinion, it is a flawed way of programming to create something that works in a browser only 15%-30% of internet users have (Firefox) instead of designing for what 65%-80% of internet users have (IE). If you don’t believe me, see the browser market share stats for yourself. (Another metric here.) I prefer Firefox hands down as it is a far better browser, but unfortunately not everyone knows that yet. So, you have to see it as, if it doesn’t work in IE, it doesn’t work — period.
If you start by programming for Firefox, you will end up debugging endlessly for IE, but if you start by programming for IE, and your designs will usually work in Firefox too.
UPDATE (08/04/2007):
Clarification and adding a couple points from my comments below:
When I say to code your site for IE first, what I mean is to create a version of your site, and test it in IE first (while keeping standards in mind). Obviously you should make sure it works in all browsers, so when you launch a new site I recommend you physically test it out and make it work on Mac, PC and Linux platforms, at all major resolutions, every browser, and several versions of each browser.
If you’re spending a fair amount of time making it work in IE, then that’s not a problem. My point was for programmers who design in Firefox, and then just complain that it doesn’t work in IE. I’m not suggested that we design sites that don’t follow standards, but at the same time, even “standards” are sometimes flawed, so don’t get hung up on them. The bottom line is that sites need to work in all browsers (I’ll be posting on this later.) Even when I’m saying that we code for IE first, we still keep standards in mind.
Every developer and development team has their own work flow, and that’s fine. Just don’t make IE last priority in the design process or you’ll be alienating most of your site’s visitors.
