Feature Suggestion: Web Browser Mute Button

by Scott Allen

Have you ever been surfing the web when a site loads and automatically starts playing an obnoxiously loud video or audio that you weren’t expecting? (Cough **MySpace** cough.)

Today I was on a Skype call with a colleague. Were were working on a project that required researching several web sites. As we were talking I ran across a couple sites that loaded videos that completely overran the call volume. It struck me how annoying it was, and I realized there is a key feature that every web browser in the world should have, and to my knowledge, none do: a Browser Mute Button

How great would that be? No need to mute the entire system…just your browser. Why has no one thought of this yet? It wouldn’t be hard to implement at all. When you have an important application, such as Skype, where you need to leave the system volume on, but you don’t want to be interrupted by random volume spikes from a web browser, just mute the browser.

So, I headed over to Mozilla’s Firefox suggestions and feedback form, and dropped them a line with my thoughts. I hope they decide to implement it, as it would be really useful for everyone who…doesn’t live in a cave. :)
